CURLING ASSOCIATION NIXES TV DEAL WITH CBC

(CBC Sports - WebPosted Wed, 06 Jul 2005 17:12:50 EDT)

Less than six months after losing the Olympic broadcast rights for 2010 and 2012, the CBC was left reeling on Wednesday after the Canadian Curling Association pulled out of a four-year contract with the television network.

Nancy Lee, head of CBC Sports, was notified in the morning that the CCA had sent out a request for proposal to all networks to pick up the rights for the 2005-06 season and beyond.

"We advised them, strenuously, that they were repudiating on our contract and as a result, we would be seeking legal recourse," Lee told CBC Sports Online. "As far as we're concerned we have three more years of a deal. "You don't get up and walk away from a signed legal document. It's very disappointing that despite all of the efforts made by CBC, the CCA is unwilling to fulfill its commitment to us."

Dave Parkes, the chief executive officer of the CCA, told The Canadian Press on Wednesday night that his organization notified the CBC by letter that they were terminating the agreement. "It's for non-performance basically and an inability to fix things over the ensuing months from April until now," he said. "We're interested in talking to anyone who is able to carry the property," Parkes said. "Our efforts on this are clearly focused on providing the best coverage we can for the sport."
