Cornwall Curling Centre Ground Breaking

Thursday September 25, 2003, will be remembered as an historic date for the City of Cornwall and the Cornwall Curling Centre. On this date, the co-operation of all levels of government and the private sector combined to produce a first class curling facility. The project has been in the making for almost a decade and has become a reality today. Since the mid 1800’s and its early beginnings along the St. Lawrence River to its recent facility on Amelia, the Curling Community in Cornwall has always produced first class participants. Now, the City of Cornwall will also be able to boast about a first class Curling Centre.

The construction of the new six-sheet facility will begin in early October and be ready for Curling by the beginning of the 2004 season. “Thanks to the hard work and support of the Curling Community, City Council, and the governments of Canada and Ontario, along with the numerous corporate sponsors, we can now present Cornwall with a top notch Curling Facility” said John Dilabio, Chairman of the New Building Committee. “This new Curling Centre will raise the profile of the sport and hopefully raise the participation of all sectors of our community, young and old,” added Dilabio.

The Groundbreaking ceremony took place in front of the future construction site located on the east side of the Cornwall Civic Complex, followed by a celebration in the Windows Room. The event saw a packed house further emphasizing the support and enthusiasm throughout the community for this new project.
